2024 Reading Goals
In effort not to wander aimless through the desolation of libraries, I like to make reading goals.
Reread my Poetry Library Collection
I have a personal bookshelf in my bedroom for my modern poetry and craft books—about 112 books, give or take (remember, poetry books are Short!)—and I’d like to reread them all this year to see what I want to keep and what I can cull. I like to keep anything I still enjoy, find instructive, or could use for teaching writing to my kids. The reason I don’t keep this with our general family library chaos is twofold: they are my personal favorite genre and modern poetry is not always kid-friendly content (Sharon Olds’ Odes for example…). I suspect I’ll keep most of this collection and that it will be fun to reread what I have.Read The Lord of the Rings trilogy as family readaloud
I’ve not read through this since I was 18, and we all so enjoyed the Hobbit, I think this would be a nice next step. However, during the school year we have other readlouds that tie in with our history / science, so I may end up reading these over the summer. Then we’ll need to obviously go hike somewhere and throw a ring off a mountain…We’ll finish the Narnia series with our homeschool curriculum sometime around April, and C.S. Lewis + Tolkien is like Peanut Butter + Jelly. Well, maybe Jelly + Peanut Butter because obviously Lewis would be the jelly of the relationship…Read all of my friends and family members Favorite Books
I’m going to be polling friends and family this year for their favorites and give them all a try, no matter how not-my-taste they may seem (I don’t make myself finish a book if I don’t like it after the first couple chapters). It stands to reason that if I like a person, I will perhaps like to read what they like (this is not always the case though). Sometimes there’s books I have preconceived notions about and don’t want to try, but end up being just wonderful!Well, that, plus all our homeschool reading and picture book endeavors, ought to keep me fairly busy this year!
What are your reading goals for 2024?
Any favorite book that you’d like to recommend?
I loved reading “The Hobbit” with my boys last year. I’m holding off on the LotR trilogy for now and reading through the “Redwall” series instead. I’m hoping that starting with “Redwall” will make LotR a little bit more accessible for my crew in a couple of years. (I definitely enjoyed “The Hobbit” more than my kids did. I was the one who wanted one more chapter. 😂)
My husband is reading LOTR for the first time right now, and I am so excited for him to finish so we can talk about it!
One of my recent favorites is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I think about it regularly.
